Michel Journiac, Oedipus rex, 1984.
Galerie Patricia Dorfmann

From his interest in religion, Michel Journiac has retained ritual processes that he will apply to the domain of art, to treat critical questions such as gender, sexuality, patriarchy, religion, democracy, capital punishment, money, death. (from Julie Crenn in Journiac Michel : Sublimate Standards, February 2012).
"Oedipus Rex" is definitely a universal work because it deals with the "family" having regard to the Oedipus complex. Created in 1984, "Oedipus Rex" is composed of three skeletons. This work represents the artist accompanied by both parents (subject frequently treated by the artist, including the inevitable "Hommage à Freud"). The father is sitting on a chair, the mother is lying on the ground, the son is hung upside down.

Projection d’Emotion Winds, par MoBen (莫奔).
Curateur : David Rosenberg

On the screen, the emotions of the world move and spread around the planet according to real-time winds, creating chance arabesques on the world map, forming meandered natural movements similar to the brushstrokes of Chinese calligraphy and ink drawing. Created through the automatic analysis of Internet data representing the emotions of 3200 of the world’s largest cities, the work understands the Internet as a de facto ‘World Nervous System’, or the harbinger of the planet’s emotional sensitivities.
Emotion Winds, is the last avatar of the Mechanics of Emotions series of artworks. Beginning in 2005, with MoBen’s solo show, e-Market, Emotional Market, at the 18 on the Bund Gallery in Shanghai, Mechanics of Emotions considers the ‘World Nervous System’ as reflecting the feelings and the emotions of humankind. Mechanics of Emotions includes installations, digital sculptures, musical performances, an Emotion Vending Machine, Interactive installations, and Urban Screens displayed all around the world (New, York, Paris, Berlin, Dubai, Sydney, Melbourne, Seoul, Hong Kong… and Shanghai).
Emotion Winds expands the running theme of this far-reaching oeuvre, namely the relationship between ‘big data’ and what MoBen describes as ‘the human factor’ - that which makes something tangibly human. The works in the series utilize techniques from economics to measure human sensitivities or feelings, looking at ways in which conventional forms of quantification of Big Data can give credence to systems detached from, or playing with, the very tenor of human emotions. In other works in the Mechanics of Emotions series, stock market data has been directly compared to information related to real human affects. In Emotion Winds, these same human emotions are overlaid and combined with graphic representations of natural phenomena such as global wind cycles, and a poetic visualization finally emerges of Internet emotion streams from different cities across the world being taken and shared by the power of the planet’s real winds.
This new work reflects the aesthetic impact of Asian culture on MoBen’s practice since his first installations in Asia (China, Korea, Japan…), and his recent move to Hong Kong.

Graingrain, Cocok et Cocoface, Guillaume Castel dans la Cour de Soubise.
Galerie Ariane C-Y sur une proposition de Christophe Ménager

Guillaume Castel sculpts landscapes. The self-taught artist cultivates a deep bond with his native country. The bay of Morlaix, the land, the sea, the seashore are the cradle of his inspiration. Mineral and vegetable forms emerge out of the studio. The sculptor enlarges their proportions, thins them out and stretches them. The uncluttered design draws an outline or the edges of a solid form.
Guillaume Castel uses lacquer to bring bright colours to concrete and steel. These two materials are the ones he uses for his monumental pieces. His sculptures often go by pair or more. The artist creates a dialogue between them and their natural or architectural environment. He enjoys playing with the strength of the rough materials and the elegant fragility of nature.
Guillaume Castel has been exhibiting since 2001. In 2014, he is part of the selection of Grandeur, organised by the Beelden aan Zee Museum. He is one of the youngest artists to represent contemporary French Sculpture in The Hague, Netherlands.
The gallery Ariane C-Y presents three series by Guillaume Castel at the YIA beyond the walls, hosted by the Archives nationales from October 22 until November 3 2014.
Graingrain was created for Grandeur. It will be exhibited for the first time in France at The Archives nationales during YIA beyond the walls. It will be surrounded by Cocok and Cocoface series. The latter, two monumental sculptures, is being made especially for this event.

Miao Xiaochun, Microcosm & Disillusion

Miao Xiao Chun creates virtual universes, parallel worlds that come from the farthest reaches of his imagination. A tireless observer of nature, he draws energy and inspiration both from masters of occidental painting and ancient Chinese culture alike, as one would from the greatest of classical musicians. The old and the new, the past and the future, myth and dream and the subconscious merging, generating a stream of images springing forth, like fountains.
Deep, immersed in a world that is at once visual and resonant, the spectator is carried away by the flow of a story, of a process that ramifies into the infinite.
Ice becomes fire, the body becomes minerals, a tangible world dissolves before our eyes while particles that float in space come together to give life to an animal or unknown creature.
All is alive, swirling, occurring in cycles of metamorphosis without end. Sometimes one tumbles in another dimension or in another time, sometimes one accompanies the metamorphosis of an object or of a landscape, sometimes, again, we follow pilgrimages of one or of many, figures traveling across different worlds.
Opera or odyssey, it's as if the images of our dreams coalesce with images of ancient canvases that the artist hangs on museum walls so as to transport himself to the other side of the mirror, there where that which was frozen is brought to life again, there where the substance of the imaginary gives back to life all that she touches and envelopes with her energy.
David Rosenberg
Considered as one of the most important digital artist in Asia today, Miao Xiaochun graduated from the China Central Academy of Fine Arts and the Kunsthocshsule Kassel, Germany. Now he works as a professor at CAFA. Miao Xiaochun lives and works in Beijing. He has exhibited worldwide and represented China at the 55th Venice Biennale, 2013.
