5-6 July 2016 - Braunschweig, Germany - EMBRIC WP6

"The future of microbial cultivation: new access to novel molecules"

A joint EMBRIC-DZIF Expert Workshop
Hosted by the Leibniz Institute DSMZ–German Collection of Microorganisms and Cell Cultures

Goal: The goal of the workshop is to discuss existing concepts and future improvements for the cultivation of novel types of microorganisms, their future significance as a source of novel molecules, and to  generate new implementable ideas for existing and upcoming joint research activities.

Background: The workshop is co-funded by the German Center for Infection Research (DZIF) and the EU Horizon 2020 European Marine Biological Research Infrastructure Cluster (EMBRIC). The EU project EMBRIC aims to improve the scientific discovery and innovation process from marine bioresource cultivation through  to  application by establishing or improving multidisciplinary technological workflows, scientific training, and knowledge transfer. In a complementary fashion, DZIF aims to align translational infection research to develop new diagnostic, preventative and therapeutic methods for treating infectious
diseases. One of DZIF’s objectives is to link infection research and small molecule libraries through the development of new applications and usages of known or new strains and the host of the workshop, DSMZ, maintains the pathogen and microbiome repository for all DZIF partners.

Location: Campus Braunschweig-Stöckheim, Inhoffenstrasse 7B, Building Z (DSMZ), Seminar room, 4th floor (D30/31).

27-30 June 2016 - Berlin, Germany- EMBRIC WP3

EMBRIC WP3 members will participate in the  MaCuMBA (Marine Microorganisms: Cultivation Methods for Improving their Biotechnological Applications, ) closing meeting which will take place in Berlin-Adlershof from the 27th till the 30th of June.

At the meeting WP3 will present EMBRIC platforms as a pipeline to stakeholders from biotech, industry and academia and discuss the gaps and bottlenecks in the discovery and exploitation of marine compounds.

21 June 2016 - Bilbão, Spain

Workshop on the Regions' support to blue biotechnologies value chains in Europe is organized in the framework of the EMBRC Research Infrastructure. Research infrastructures such as EMBRC must ensure sustainability in the long run and thus need to strengthen the partnership with regional stakeholders. EMBRC laboratories and services are located in peripheral maritime regions, often far from the major knowledge and decision-making centres. Typically, marine stations are also geographically separated from major concentrations of industry and located in areas with unemployment rates above the European average. In their Smart Specialization Strategies (S3), several maritime regions fully recognize the potential of blue growth and the bioeconomy as a way to mitigate these problems, raise their position in the innovation scale, and attractiveness to human and financial capital. In order to develop their S3s the Regions have access to European structural and social funds. Therefore, partnerships with the regions will contribute to sustainability of EMBRC and to economic growth and employment in the regions.

12-13 May 2016 - Oslo, Norway

One of EMBRIC's six Research infrastructures ELIXIR organises an Innovation and SME Forum: Data-driven innovation in the aquaculture and marine industries

The event will introduce delegates to some of the free tools, data resources and services that are available through ELIXIR, highlight examples of research-intensive companies already making use of big data in their respective fields, and stimulate interaction between companies and the academic partners involved in running ELIXIR resources. Intended audience: large and small companies interested in aquaculture, fish farming and breeding, bioprospecting and marine metagenomics.

Workshop on Shipment and traceability of living organisms: the need for a common strategy to facilitate the use of marine biological resources

Please, find here the final programme of the Workshop

The European Marine Biological Research Infrastructure Cluster (EMBRIC), would like to invite you to participate in a 2-day workshop on “shipment and traceability of living organisms” dedicated to standardization of methods for transport of live organisms, identification of bottlenecks for shipment and quality control measures. A key role of biological research infrastructures is the remote provision of live organisms for which increased demand is anticipated. However, there is a need to consider measures that facilitate movement of organisms without compromising welfare and safety, or promoting the spread of diseases and pathogens, and considering potential benefit sharing issues. The workshop invites stakeholders (providers, users, carriers, ...) from academia, industry and policy to discuss how provision of live marine organisms can be improved by considering the procedures and implication for their shipment, transport, delivery and tracing. You are invited to propose 15-20 minutes contributions and participate in the discussions.

8-9 September 2015: Marine Biotech Workshop on collaboration opportunities

A noon to noon workshop with the coordinators/leaders of a selected group of project leaders of various European Bioeconomy projects and networks was held from 8 to 9 September 2015 in Berlin, Germany. The aim of the workshop was to identify potential overlaps in research topics/goals and explore opportunities for collaboration between European marine biotechnology initiatives.

During this workshop hosted by ERA-MBT (European Research Area - Marine Biotechnology) explored common interests with other networks which could lead to future collaborations. The goal of the workshop was to find concrete cooperation actions between  the 13 networks and projects that were present at the meeting (ERA-MBT, ERA-PLATFORM, ERA-NET SUSFOOD, FACCE SURPLUS, ERA-SysAPP, IraSME, JPI Oceans, EMBRIC, FACCE JPI, ERA-Bioenergy, ERASynBio, ERA-ib2, EEN). One of the concrete collaborative actions in the capacity building and knowledge transfer thematic was to bring the industry and academia together. In this perspective EMBRIC will play a crucial role in identifiying the training needs within the ERA-MBT consortium through the tool.
